Meet Dandy

Dandy the lion 

Dandy is the lion I adopted in order to become a member of the Shameless Lions Writing Circle - an idea spawned from the grasshopper mind of Shameless Words, poet, artist, musician, composer, photographer, blogger and general creative maniac.

There’s still time to adopt a lion, but there are certain requirements, one of which is to write a short piece of poetry or prose to accompany a picture of your lion in the sidebar of your blog.

Here’s my 48 words

After a tiny fragment of meteorite embedded itself in his fur as a cub, Dandy evolved differently than other lions, and developed into a wise Shaman vegan lion. In his spare time he enjoys curling up with a James Bond DVD and a bucket of deep fried beancurd.

But I got carried away and went on to write this:

A sonnet for Dandy

It hides inside that fur, those claws, those teeth,
those eyes he has to see, that nose to smell.
His bestial form bestrides the earth he owns.
His is the vision of a god in hell.

He comprehends it all, he knows his place,
it is to stride with pride, to snarl and kill,
to cull the weak, and motivate the rest.
He does his job, it keeps his Shaman still.

Yet there within, the restless thing, his life;
a need to know, to grow, to snare a friend,
a yearning for a love he cannot name,
belief that light will be there at the end.

His heart is strong, but breath must stop, he knows.
He lifts his head towards the clouds and roars.
